Google introduced a new browser yesterday and by some accounts their Chrome browser has gained 3% market share in a less than two days. Google is after world domination and if you aren’t careful your company will get run over as Google takes up more share of the Internet pie.
Chrome is not the only non-search project that Google has on the go. There is also a new product called Knol which is Google’s answer to Wikipedia. Additionally Google also has an older service called Panoramio which allows you to post geotagged pictures for others to see. I decided to do a little experiment and within one day of posting information on Knol and Panoramio those posts were indexed by Google and returned in the search results. With that kind of speed and reach it will be imperative that your company is taking advantage of these services.
Portuguese Swamp Experiment
There is an area near where I live called the Portuguese Swamp. I was curious about this area and did a little research. I turned that research in to an article in Knol that discussed what I learned. For the article I took a picture of the Portuguese Swamp and posted it to Panoramio. As of today if you do a search on Portuguese Swamp these two items on other websites come up 4th and 5th in the main Google search results.
An added benefit of the Panoramio service is that Google will display these pictures on Google Maps if the searcher selects the more|pictures option. If we take my Portuguese Swamp picture as an example that one picture will appear in Knol, Panoramio and maps.google.com. That is blended search at work.
Search, Google search in particular, is a doorway to content. You need to make sure you have content for all the possible doors that search will open for you.
